Dumfries and Galloway is a large rural council area in south-west Scotland, covering the historic counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire. The main towns are spread across a wide area:

Wheelchair access and mobility support in Dumfries and Galloway

Accessibility is mixed: larger towns have better facilities, while rural areas rely more on community transport and pre-booked options. Recent improvements have focused on taxis and the main station at Dumfries.

Buses Most local buses are low-floor and wheelchair-accessible. The Scottish National Entitlement Card (NEC) provides free bus travel across Scotland for eligible disabled people (and for those aged 60+). Companion options and the Blind Persons’ Scheme (free bus/train/coach) are also available. Services can be infrequent in rural parts.

Rail

• Dumfries station now has full step-free access to both platforms via a new footbridge and lifts (completed 2024 under the Access for All scheme). Accessible toilets, staff assistance, ramps and a wheelchair are available.
• Stranraer, Lockerbie and Gretna are generally more accessible.

Taxis Dumfries and Galloway Council maintains a register of designated wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs). In 2026 the council created a region-wide licensing zone specifically for WAVs (so they can operate anywhere in the area) and reduced licensing fees to encourage more of them. Drivers of designated vehicles must carry wheelchair users without extra charge and provide reasonable assistance. A Taxicard scheme offers eligible residents £100 per year towards taxi fares. Pre-booking is essential, especially outside Dumfries and Stranraer.

Community / door-to-door transport Community Transport Dumfries and Galloway and local groups (e.g. Glenkens Transport Initiative) provide wheelchair-accessible minibuses, demand-responsive door-to-door services, volunteer car schemes and group transport. These are particularly important in rural areas where conventional buses are limited. Contact local operators or the council for eligibility and booking.

Mobility scooters and equipment A Dumfries mobility scooter hire scheme allows short-term free use in the town centre for people with mobility impairments. Shopmobility-style services and NHS wheelchair provision are available regionally. Blue Badge parking is in place.
